Promotional Mugs: Porcelain, Ceramic or Glass?

Home > Blog

Published: · Updated:

Promotional mugs are a branded item that people use, not just store. The harder part is not deciding to order them; it is choosing the right material, preparing the artwork and understanding how the print is applied.

This guide is for buyers placing a corporate order: cafe owners, promotional agencies and procurement teams. It compares porcelain, ceramic and glass, explains how fired decal printing works and lists what to prepare before asking for a quote.

What are promotional mugs?

Promotional mugs are mugs printed with a company logo or design and given to customers, staff or event guests. For corporate orders they are usually made from porcelain, ceramic or glass, and the logo is applied with a method such as fired decal printing.

Where Sundekor fits: Sundekor is an Istanbul-based producer of printed porcelain mugs, porcelain cups, ceramic mugs and glassware for business buyers. Logos are applied with fired decal printing, so the colour bonds with the surface of the product instead of sitting on top like a label. Orders start at 100 pieces and are shipped across Türkiye and abroad.

Why drinkware works as a corporate gift

Branded drinkware earns its place because it is used. In its Ad Impressions Study on drinkware, published in June 2026, ASI (Advertising Specialty Institute) reported that 87% of end users said they would keep a branded drinkware item because it is useful.

The same study found that more than three-quarters of respondents would use a promotional drinkware piece at least once a week and keep it for at least a year. ASI estimates average lifetime brand impressions for drinkware at about 1,300. These figures cover the whole drinkware category, of which ceramic mugs are one part.

What this means in practice:

  • A mug can provide repeated brand exposure during use. It sits on a desk, in a kitchen or on a cafe counter.
  • Usefulness drives retention. People keep the items they use, so the product itself has to be one they want to use.
  • The print is part of the impression. A logo that is blurred or poorly placed is repeated every time the mug is used.

Porcelain vs ceramic vs glass

The three materials look and feel different, and the right choice depends on how the mug will be used. Properties vary by model, wall thickness and finish, so treat the points below as general tendencies and compare the specific products.

Porcelain

  • Feel: usually thinner and lighter, with a fine finish.
  • Typical use: espresso and tea service, premium gifts.
  • Good for: cafes, restaurants and executive gifts.

Ceramic

  • Feel: usually thicker and heavier.
  • Typical use: office mugs and everyday coffee.
  • Good for: staff kits, events and larger runs.

Glass

  • Feel: transparent, with a clean look.
  • Typical use: tea glasses, water and cold drinks.
  • Good for: hospitality and brand displays where the drink is part of the presentation. The design has to work on a transparent surface.

In short: choose porcelain when the mug is part of how you serve, ceramic for everyday office use, and glass when the drink itself is part of the presentation. You can browse each range on the porcelain mugs, ceramic mugs and glass products pages.

How fired decal printing works

Fired decal printing is the method we use on porcelain, ceramic and glass. It is different from sublimation and from stickers.

1. Decal printing. The design is printed with ceramic colours onto a carrier paper. This printed sheet is the decal.

2. Transfer. The decal is transferred onto the product in the agreed position.

3. Firing. The products are fired. On porcelain and ceramic mugs the colour bonds with the glaze; on glass it is fired onto the glass surface. The logo becomes part of the surface rather than a layer on top.

A fired decal is resistant to washing; how long it lasts depends on the print area, the ceramic colours used and the firing conditions. Read more about the method on our decal printing page.

Artwork requirements

Preparing the file well avoids delays and keeps the print sharp. Before you send a logo, check these points:

  • Send a vector file. AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF keeps edges sharp at any size. A screenshot or small JPG blurs when enlarged, and a fired print cannot be corrected afterwards.
  • Count your colours. The number of colours affects the decal and the quote. A logo that works in one or two colours is often cleaner on a mug.
  • Mind fine lines and small text. Very thin strokes and tiny text can fill in or break up at mug size. Simplify the mark if it is used small.
  • Decide on placement. Left-handed and right-handed users see different sides of the mug, so say where the logo should sit when you ask for a quote.
  • Expect colours to differ from a screen. A logo on screen is shown in light; on a mug it is printed in ceramic colours. Ask about colour matching for your brand colours in the quote.

How an order with Sundekor works

Sundekor works with business buyers, and every order is quoted individually.

  • Minimum order: 100 pieces.
  • Pricing: guide prices are shown in the price tables on our website; for the exact price, message us on WhatsApp or call us. The price depends on the mug model, the number of colours, whether gold gilding is used and the quantity, and it is set in the quote.
  • Delivery: we are based in Istanbul and ship across Türkiye and internationally. For an order outside Türkiye, ask about shipping to your country in the quote.
  • What to send: the product you are interested in, the approximate quantity and your logo file.

Common mistakes when ordering promotional mugs

  • Choosing the lowest-cost material for a premium gift. The mug represents the brand each time it is used, so choose a product that matches the impression you want to give.
  • Approving artwork only on a phone screen. Check the artwork at actual print size before you order.
  • Leaving the decision until the week of the event. Firing is a production step, not print-on-demand, so plan ahead and ask about timing in the quote.
  • Not mentioning how the mugs will be used. Tell us how the mugs will be used in daily service when you ask for a quote, especially if your logo includes metallic details such as gold gilding.

Getting your quote

Promotional mugs work when the material suits the way they will be used and the logo is prepared for print. Start by choosing between porcelain, ceramic and glass, prepare a vector logo, and then ask for a quote with your quantity.

Next step: send your logo and quantity through our contact page, and we will prepare a quote for your promotional mug order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for promotional mugs at Sundekor?

The minimum order is 100 pieces. For the exact quantity and design options of your order, ask for a quote through the contact page.

How is the price of promotional mugs calculated?

Guide prices are listed in the price tables on the website; the exact price is set in the quote. The quote depends on the mug model, the number of colours in the logo, whether gold gilding is used and the order quantity. Send your logo and quantity through the contact page and the price is set in the quote.

Will a fired decal logo peel off?

A fired decal is not a sticker: during firing the colour bonds with the surface of the mug, so it does not lift at the edges like a label. A fired decal is resistant to washing; how long it lasts depends on the print area, the ceramic colours used and the firing conditions.

Which file format should I send for my logo?

A vector file such as AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF is best. A screenshot or a small JPG loses edge sharpness when it is enlarged to print size, and a fired print cannot be corrected afterwards.

Do you ship promotional mugs outside Türkiye?

Yes. Sundekor is based in Istanbul and ships within Türkiye and abroad. Shipping to your country is confirmed in the quote, together with the price and the order quantity.

Porcelain or ceramic: which suits a cafe?

Porcelain mugs and cups are usually thinner and lighter with a fine finish, which suits espresso and tea service. Ceramic mugs are usually thicker, which suits everyday office use. Properties vary by model, so compare the specific products before ordering.
